2021 Esporão Touriga Nacional, Alentejo, Portugal

2021 Esporão Touriga Nacional, Alentejo, Portugal

ABOUT THIS WINE

Touriga Nacional is a noble Portuguese grape variety. Produces intense, balanced wines with good ageing potential. This wine is from one of the oldest vineyards of Touriga Nacional in Alentejo – Badeco vineyard in Herdade do Esporão, which is farmed organically. The Badeco vineyard is composed of poor soils of schist with a sandy-laom texture. The vineyard represents the singularity of the grape variety and the characteristics of the single vineyard combined with the experience of the ones who take care of the vineyard and the wine.

The 2021 agricultural year was a rainy year. During the vegetative rest period (Autumn – Winter) precipitation values were higher than the average of the last 22 years, with temperatures remaining mild. These precipitation values led to the fact that, at the beginning of the vegetative cycle (Spring), practically all the soils had their water reserves completely reestablished. The budburst occurred earlier, and the higher temperatures observed during the Spring accelerated the vegetative development until flowering. In Summer, milder temperatures contributed to a regular development of the vegetative cycle, allowing maturation to take pace in a regular and balanced manner.

After harvest, the wine is fermented in marble Lagares, foot-trodden. Then, it is transferred to concrete tanks where it finishes the fermentation with controlled temperatures. Finally, the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for one year, followed by minimum two years in bottle.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Esporão was founded in 1977 in the Alentejo, Portugal, out of the unconditional desire to make the finest wines. This is the motivation that remains at the basis of everything they do, now extended to other products - olive oil and tourism - and territories - the Douro and Vinho Verde. The winery is fueled organically using olives left over from making olive oil.

This is the winegrowing region with the widest variety of soils: granite, crystalline limestone-derived, Mediterranean brown and red and schist. The area is distinguished by gentle plains and shallow valleys carved out by occasional streams, a Mediterranean climate with certain areas boasting a continental microclimate and the constant presence of corn fields, vineyards and olive groves.

Summers are hot and dry, normally with over 20 days above 35° C. The springs and autumns are mild with plenty of sunny days. Winters are kind. Average rainfall during the wettest months is below 80 mm with average temperatures above 10° C, although daily temperature variations can reach 20° C.These characteristics profoundly affect Alentejo’s fauna, flora, landscape, architecture and people.

This Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) is made up of 8 sub-regions with a long tradition of wine production: Borba, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos and Vidigueira.
