2022 Jean-François Jacouton "Vin Blanc" Collines Rhodaniennes, Rhône Valley, France

2022 Jean-François Jacouton "Vin Blanc" Collines Rhodaniennes, Rhône Valley, France

ABOUT THE WINE

Jean-François Jacouton’s “Vin Blanc” is produced under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes designation, which allows him to craft an expressive regional white outside the stricter rules of the Northern Rhône’s individual appellations. Drawn from traditional local white varieties, the wine reflects the area’s characteristic combination of aromatic richness, waxy texture, and refreshing acidity.

The vineyards are situated near Vion in the northern sector of the Rhône Valley, where elevated sites and granite-influenced soils help preserve freshness in the grapes. Jacouton farms with a hands-on, low-intervention approach, employing lutte raisonnée practices and carrying out much of the vineyard work manually. His broader white-variety plantings include Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Chasselas, varieties well suited to the region’s steep slopes and continental climate.

The 2022 vintage offers ripe yet balanced fruit, with flavors of peach, pear, yellow apple, apricot, and citrus layered with floral, herbal, and faintly honeyed notes. Gentle cellar work emphasizes purity and texture rather than overt oak influence, resulting in a white that is generous without feeling heavy.

Enjoy it with roast chicken, grilled fish, seared scallops, creamy vegetable dishes, soft cheeses, or pork seasoned with herbs. It is expressive now but should continue to develop additional nutty and honeyed complexity over the next several years.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Jean-François Jacouton established his domaine in 2010, returning to vineyards near the village of Vion that had been worked by his grandfather, André. His early experience included work with established Rhône producers before he began bottling wines under his own name. The estate has since grown to approximately eight hectares, with holdings focused largely on elevated sites in and around Saint-Joseph.

Jacouton is known as a deeply hands-on grower who spends much of his time in the vineyards. He practices lutte raisonnée, works steep parcels manually or with horses where necessary, and has restored old stone terraces that had been abandoned after phylloxera. His winemaking is similarly traditional and restrained, using vessels such as neutral barrels, wooden vats, concrete, and amphora according to the needs of each wine.

The domaine’s wines combine the savory, mineral character of the Northern Rhône with an appealing sense of freshness and accessibility. Whether working within celebrated appellations or under the broader Collines Rhodaniennes designation, Jacouton’s focus remains on careful farming, transparent winemaking, and an honest expression of place.
