2023 Esporao "Artist Series" Reserva White, Alentejo, Portugal
ABOUT THIS WINE
Esporão Reserva was the first wine produced by Esporão, in 1985. It was born from our desire to produce the best wines in Alentejo. Over the years, it has been a wine that has led us to innovate, grow, look at our origins, care about nature, and see beyond. We have adopted sustainable agricultural practices, more recently we have converted all our vineyards to organic farming, built new wineries, and traveled to other markets, taking Alentejo and Portugal to the world.
Art accompanies Esporão Reserva from the first moment. Every year we invite a new artist to illustrate our labels and each work tells a story that is completed within. This year's artist is Eduardo Aires.
The 2023 agricultural year was hot and dry. During the vegetative rest period (Autumn -Winter) there were mild temperatures and higher precipitation values than in 2022, however, in Spring-Summer temperatures were much higher and precipitation was very low. In the vineyard, because of all these factors, there was an advancement in phenology. The harvest was early and concentrated in a few weeks, with the optimal maturation of the various varieties being reached quickly, providing aromatic, intense and highly complex wines. Soils here are composed of granite & schist with a loam and clay structure.
Grapes are destemmed, then the winemaker uses cold settling, skin maceration, pressing, and must decantation. The wine is then process through temperature-controlled fermentation with 75% of the batch in stainless steel tanks and 25% in new American and French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for six months in stainless steel tanks and in new American and French oak barrels, on fine lees.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Esporão was founded in 1977 in the Alentejo, Portugal, out of the unconditional desire to make the finest wines. This is the motivation that remains at the basis of everything they do, now extended to other products - olive oil and tourism - and territories - the Douro and Vinho Verde. The winery is fueled organically using olives left over from making olive oil.
This is the winegrowing region with the widest variety of soils: granite, crystalline limestone-derived, Mediterranean brown and red and schist. The area is distinguished by gentle plains and shallow valleys carved out by occasional streams, a Mediterranean climate with certain areas boasting a continental microclimate and the constant presence of corn fields, vineyards and olive groves.
Summers are hot and dry, normally with over 20 days above 35° C. The springs and autumns are mild with plenty of sunny days. Winters are kind. Average rainfall during the wettest months is below 80 mm with average temperatures above 10° C, although daily temperature variations can reach 20° C.These characteristics profoundly affect Alentejo’s fauna, flora, landscape, architecture and people.
This Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) is made up of 8 sub-regions with a long tradition of wine production: Borba, Évora, Granja-Amareleja, Moura, Portalegre, Redondo, Reguengos and Vidigueira.
